Relevance A library media specialist promotes learning in a school setting especially by promoting reading and literacy. He or she should be flexible and helps teachers and students to promote reading as literacy to success. I used a variety of strategies in my lesson and considered a diverse population in my school. I made sure that my lessons are clear, accepts changes if needed and use different resources. I always create a lesson with the help of technology like using PowerPoint presentations, Microsoft word to emphasize spelling for the primary level, iPads, and wikis. It is important for me that the students know the context of the lesson before I begin a new lesson and collaborate with their classroom teacher. Also, I share the library resources to all the teachers and train them in using the database, videos and EBooks that they can use with their students.
During my ISTC 601, of Library Media Administration, we were asked to create a facility design plan for our own library. I find it really helpful because I was able to list down all the programs I want to have in my school, like having fixed and schedules for everyone, book fairs, book club, storytelling, accessing database for research, conducting training on how to use the library resources and database, family reading night and write a book program. I was able to use all these plans in my new school, Rosa L. Parks Elementary. I have scheduled a book fair on the first week of October, I have invited students to join the book club, scheduled a training for the staff next week on how to use the OPAC and EBooks, scheduled our family reading and math night on the seventh of next month and planned our write a book before December with the reading specialist of our school. It is also absurd that my library now has a lot of similarities with my design. I think everything I learned from this class is very useful especially for new librarians. The course is very informative and helps me go through my everyday work as a librarian. I also learned that there are different personalities in the school, but a librarian should always be open, friendly and helpful to everyone. During my ISTC 667, of Instructional Design and Development, I made a final project that shows the collaborative instructional design process and explaining the different approaches on my lesson plan. Every librarian needs to learn how to collaborate with other subject areas and know how to write a lesson plan that has the standards, objectives, resources (print and non-print) and assessment. A librarian should be open for other possibilities in the library. This project taught me to be flexible to everyone, collaborate with teachers and offer different resources to align my goals.
This semester, I am also taking ISTC 789, Portfolio in Library Media, and I appreciate the use of journal writing to reflect on my experiences everyday in the library. It is something I could look back in the future, to read my struggles and fun as a new librarian in this school. Journal writing helps me think of more activities I could do to my classes as time goes by. It helps me understand my instructional goals for all the diverse student population and to provide appropriate resources, instructional and technology services to everyone.
In my course of Children's Literature and Materials in Reading, EDUC 717, I learned how to write reading logs. It is similar to the review and evaluation that school librarians do every quarter. I learned from this course how to review and evaluate children's books. I specifically included the genres, description, characters in the story, themes, literary qualities, reading level and how can different subject areas use it. It is important to learn all these and be able to identify especially the reading level of books because each book is different and caters different ages. I am in the process of reviewing four books for my review and evaluation this quarter and it is easier for me to do because of what I have learned from this course. This semester I am taking Instructional Literacy and Access. My partner and I made an assignment called instructional matrix, which summarizes a collaborating lesson about a single topic. The topic assigned to us was "trees" and we were able to create lessons collaborated with Math, Music, Science, Geography and Art. We used the technology literacy standards and MSDE state curriculum standards. I learned that as a school librarian, I should know how to establish instructional goals for the library media program that are appropriate to the setting and students. I should always demonstrate the ability to collaborate with the teachers and administration. Since librarians are considered as an informational specialist, instructional consultant and program administrator, it is important to establish my goals and design a school-wide instructional program.
