Candidates employ strategies to integrate multiple literacies with content curriculum. Candidates integrate the use of emerging technologies as a means for effective and creative teaching and to support P-12 students' conceptual understanding, critical thinking and creative processes.
A library media specialist promotes information literacy skills. She or he teaches the students and teachers to be independent learners, knows how to gather information and use technology safely and responsibly. She should promote reading books and other formats, which will create life-long learners.
During my ISTC 789, Practicum course, I created lesson plans that are in line with the twenty-first century literacy skills. My first lesson plan was about using Makerspace, which is similar to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education projects. In this lesson, I read a book, showed them a how-to video and the students created a simple circuit using LED light, coin battery and copper tape. The students were very interested and excited about it. But I do agree with Dr. Robinson’s comment that this lesson can be stretched to two sessions.
I also made a lesson plan about using a free online database called CultureGrams. CultureGrams is a database to search for facts and information about countries around the world. I had to use the iPad cart because my purpose is always 1:1 ratio of computer to student. I also asked the students to answer a five-point activity that has questions about the country I picked for them. After they submitted their work, I checked them and gave to the classroom teacher to add their grades in SchoolMax under Social Studies. The sixth graders appreciated this lesson because they were working on a project about Mexico.
The third lesson plan I made was about TrueFlix. This is a free EBook website from our library catalog. Students were asked to read books that they like, share their thoughts about EBooks and its advantages, and share something they learned from the EBook of their choice. I try to promote reading books, EBooks and database because I feel that we have a lot of resources but they are not used in our school. This year, my focus is really to use all these resources and create more interesting lessons for all my students, so they can use them in their assignments and projects.
In my ISTC 651, Information Literacy and Access course, we made a five-minute presentation about our choice of database. We had to evaluate the online database website, give the reading and interest level, mention what we like about it and what we did not like, tell something about the treatment and give approval or recommendations. I picked the CutlureGrams because I have already used it in my school. What I like about this database are the photos, videos, interviews, diversity, and great information for each country around the world. This database supports the books that we have in the library, and there are more details into it. I also taught them that they have to be careful in selecting websites and choose only the safe sites that have .edu, .org, or .gov, and websites that they can find in our Destiny catalog. One thing that I did not like was the captions. I wish they had captions to describe what was happening in each photograph so students can learn and understand more their culture. This assignment was very informative because I also learned from my classmates’ presentations and would try them in the future.
