Candidates collaborate with classroom teachers to reinforce a wide variety of reading instructional strategies to ensure P-12 students are able to create meaning from text.
A library media specialist provides learning by partnering with teachers and the school community to ensure that there is collaboration. Students learn the information literacy skills and technology skills to become lifelong learners.
During my ISTC 789, Practicum, I managed to collaborate with all the homeroom teachers in our school. I always collaborate my lessons from head start to sixth grade. I always send them email and ask their theme/s for the week, and they were very helpful and always communicate with me. When they have a project, they tell me what book they need for the class so they can use during their lessons. I always have a teacher’s choice and student’s choice book options. Students from fourth to sixth grades can borrow two books and use these two options, while the lower grades get to pick only one book of the teacher’s choice. So far, I never heard any complain with the lower grades. They liked the books that I picked for them. An example of a project is the poetry and STEM project for early January. I prepare my students for their lesson on poetry writing by picking poetry books that they can read. I also introduced to them TrueFlix eBooks, where they can read six books about experiments to make them think about what project they want to do for the STEM fair. I may not have a lot of experiment books, but I helped the students look for interesting Science related books that might be useful for their projects.
In the same ISTC 789 Practicum class, I made a lesson plan about shapes for the kindergartens. I sang songs with the students, and used the strategy pair and share so they can practice their listening and speaking skills. We also read a book, discussed the author, illustrator, title, setting and characters of the story. The students enjoyed the activities during our lesson. I showed them real photos of shapes in our surroundings, asked them to create different shapes out of popsicle sticks and also their fingers. It was a fun lesson and my kindergarten teachers appreciate it also. Their team leader sent me an email saying their students enjoyed our lesson about shapes and they appreciate my effort on making a collaborative media program.
