A library media specialist supports students and teachers in seeking information inside and outside of school. He or she provides valuable information services to everyone in school. There must be different text formats that he or she provides and also make everyone aware of the diversity of information they can get from different resources in the library.
During my ISTC 651, Information Literacy and Access, I presented a report with my partner about cyber bullying and cyber safety. I used videos from youtube and showed two websites of cyber safety software and three cyber safety websites that teachers can use to show the students in class. My partner discussed cyber bullying and a website about this issue. I feel that there is really a need to make the students aware of this issue because students now spend more time in social medias. Cyber bullying happens when a person bullies someone in a social media and makes fun of it. The victims of cyber bullying sometimes face depression or have suicidal attempt. Some of them succeeded in ending their lives and did not get any help from anyone. I feel that it is very important to teach my students this issues on cyber safety and cyber bullying because they need guidance in how to use the Internet and social media properly. I am planning to teach this when we get back from the thanksgiving break. I want my students to learn that cyber bullying does not happen only in social media, but also when they send mean text messages or emails, embarrass their classmates by posting photos or videos and making fake profiles just to make fun of it.
In my ISTC 789, Practicum, I made a lesson on using CultureGrams. CultureGrams is a database sponsored by the county for students and teachers’ use. You can learn the culture from different countries around the world. There are real photos, interviews of people who live in that area, song of their national anthem, food and recipes, demographics, flag, and a lot more. I like that it can also compute the distance from one country to another and students can listen for a read-aloud option. It also talks about third world countries or richest country. There are facts that are very interesting for students. When I had this lesson with my students from first to sixth grades, I also showed them a real globe so they know the difference of a map from globe. The students enjoyed this lesson because they learned different interesting facts about Asia, which was my example in our lesson. I picked a country for them to research and they answered a 4-point questionnaire. I had to adjust the activities so the first and second grades can understand it better. Since I do not have a lot of books about Mexico, my sixth graders were able to get more information for their project in Social Studies using CultureGrams. The teacher also used this in her class after I showed her how to use it.
