Relevance

Libraries should be open to everyone in the school. A flexible schedule should meet the needs of the students and teachers. There should be designated areas in the library for reading, computers, magazines, audio books, DVDs, reference, picture, fiction, and non-fiction books. There should be a circulation area to daily monitor the circulation of books in the library. The librarian should be organized because the library is a very busy and used place in the school building.

During my ISTC 601, Library Media Administration class, I made a facility design assignment. This was one of my favorite assignments because I made my own design of the library, my own library program, and chose the furniture I wanted for my library design. My proposed library was located near the entrance of the school building and principal's office, where everyone has an easy access. It has a dimension of 65 by 35 feet. My husband and I designed the blueprint using MS Visio, then designed in CAD by our architect friend. When I first saw my library at Rosa L. Parks Elementary, I was surprised because it was 90% similar to my design. It has a studio room, librarian’s office, cable room, storage room, and even the shelving and book titles on the wall were the same. This year, I have done the ten programs I wrote in my key assignment. These were circulation, full class and small class discussions, storytelling, browsing and researching, giving workshops and professional development, morning show, book fair, family reading night, book talk, book club (Read to Succeed Program), quiet reading time and write-a-book. It has been three months since I started my practicum/job, and I already have done all these. I feel accomplished and looking forward to add more programs in my library this year.

In my ISTC 789, Practicum, I wrote a lesson plan on how to use the OPAC or Online Public Access Catalog. I taught my students how to find books from our catalog and also showed them an option of using Destiny Quest. In Destiny Quest, they have an option to see the new books and the top 10 books from our library. I taught this lesson to my first to sixth grade students. I also allowed them to use the iPad, so they can move around the room looking for their book/s. Destiny is the database we use for our OPAC or catalog. Now, all my students know how to use it. They also know that Destiny offers other things, like database and eBooks. They love using it and most of them told me they were using it at home. Even our teachers know how to use it. When they want to borrow books, they just go to Destiny and look if the books are available. They find the call number and send me an email. This makes it easier for us to communicate when they want to borrow books.
