Candidates demonstrate their ability to design and adapt relevant learning experiences that engage students in authentic learning through the use of digital tools and resources. Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research, learning, creating, and communicating in a digital society.
Student gets their confidence in using technology, research database and surfing on websites, when they know these are safe to use and if they know how to use it properly. The library media specialist’s task is to make sure that all her or his students are confident in using technology and information literacy skills. She or he should also teach the students to use other skills like listening, speaking, visual and technology skills.
During my ISTC 789, Practicum, I taught my students how to use an eBook website called TrueFlix. This is a website provided by the county and it has 18 genres of books with four to five books from each genre. I introduced this lesson to kindergarten to sixth grade. I provided iPads with 1:1 ratio and also headphones. Trueflix books have real photographs, and there is a short video to support the eBook. The best part, which my students loved was the read-aloud option, where the iPad read to them the story. I asked them to read books related to their theme in class and the fourth to sixth grades read a book about experiments to prepare them for the STEM fair in early January. I also gave a professional development on how to use this website, and the teachers liked it too. Whenever my students have their quiet reading time, they would borrow the iPads and headphones, and read eBooks from TrueFlix. They also mentioned that they were reading these books at home.
In my ISTC 789, Practicum, I also made a lesson about CultureGrams. The students learned that they can access this database from the same website where they can search for library books. They liked it because they did not have to remember a different website address just to get there. This lesson helped my sixth grade classes to finish their project in Social Studies about Mexico. I only have a few books in the library about this country, and this database helped them to find more relevant information to finish their project. It was also safe to use, and they did not have to go to Google to look for photos. This year, my students will be having projects about different countries and I felt that it’s good to teach them this lesson earlier, so they know where to get valuable information other than books. We also discovered that they can cite the website in MLA and APA format, which will be one of my collaborative lessons with the sixth grade language arts teacher. There were too many options we found from this database, and they were all excited to read it and find out the culture from different countries around the world.
