Candidates use evidence-based, action research to collect data. Candidates interpret and use data to create and share new knowledge to improve practice in school libraries.
A library media specialist should be capable of conducting research and plans for his/her library. It is important that he/she knows how to write a research proposal, conduct surveys and knows how to plan for the improvement of the library services.
During my ISTC 601, Library Media Administration, I learned how to make an action plan that reflects the library plan of Wyngate Elementary School for the school year 2014-2015. I was lucky to interview my former classmate at Towson, Erin O’Connor. I really like this assignment we did because I was able to use it on my practicum this year. I also made my action plan for the school year 2015-2016 at Rosa L. Parks Elementary. My action plan’s goal is that 70% of students will demonstrate proficiency in using the OPAC, database and eBooks that will support their information literacy, reading and writing skills. I have done 100% from my action plan, and I feel that my students are 50% proficient in using Destiny, databases and eBooks. There are still a lot to work on, but I am happy that my students are getting better each week in using these three things I am promoting in my Media classes. I have maintained a high number of circulation of books for the first quarter and also students are excited about our Read to Succeed Reading Program, which motivates them to read more so they can earn a ticket to Six Flags in March 2016. I give lessons on how to use the eBooks and databases that we have in our catalog for free. There is a 1:1 ratio of iPad use in my library and this helps me to motivate my students in using the online resources we have.
In my ISTC 685, Research class, I learned how to create survey questionnaires using Google Form. My sample surveys were about giving the librarian some information about how much the teachers and students know about the library services she offers and how she can invite more teachers and students to use the library. This class helped me create good survey questions and I would love to use this survey to my school. It might be too late now, because I think this survey should be given in the beginning of the year, but I would really love to use this survey forms to my school early next school year. In my Research class, I learned how to make a research proposal. My topic was about parental involvement and its effects on student’s reading achievement. I learned a lot from this class. I learned how to make survey questions, knew how to analyze demographics, and read articles that will support my research. I think the reading part was the most difficult part because I really had to find relevant information and similar topics to my research proposal. I would really love to do this kind of research in the future if time permits and if I would have someone to help me do this research. What I learned from this class were unforgettable and something to look forward to in the future. Maybe someday my principal would ask me to write a research on something related to reading or library services, and I think I can always look back to this project I did as a reference guide.
