Relevance

The media specialist must have a collaborative partnership within the learning community for the success of the library media program. He or she must collaborate not only with the students, teachers, and parents, but also within the local community members like the public library or librarian organizations. He or she is an advocate of learning and promotes a positive atmosphere of mutual effort and respect.

During my practicum course, ISTC 789, I was able to speak with public librarians in Hyattsville to help me promote reading by getting public library cards to all my kindergarten to sixth grade students. I explained to my students the services they can get from the public library like learning English or Spanish, getting help for their assignments, borrowing 3 books at a time, story time, chess class, and Science, Technology, Experiments and Math (STEM) class. I was also able to promote the public library to our parents during our back-to-school night. I prepared two slides for our principal to present that night, and parents became aware of these free services they can get from a public library. When parents visit my library, I also share with them the benefits they can get from visiting a public library. Parents can borrow up to 75 books if they have a public library card. They can also read in different formats like audio books, eBooks, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and also borrow iPads. This Thanksgiving break, I told my students to visit a public library to borrow books so they can complete their Six Flags reading logs and they can still read books at home. Our STEM fair coming and the public library offers a STEM for family exploration activity where they have hands-on experiments and fun activities.

In my practicum, ISTC 789, I was given a chance to pick a mentor who will help me whenever I have questions or difficulties in my job. I picked Lilliann Manuel, a librarian from Stephen Decatur Middle School in Clinton, Maryland. I picked her because she is my friend since we started working as librarians in Prince George’s County in 2007. She taught me how to promote reading by recommending the Six Flags Read to Succeed Program. She inspired me what I can write on my action plan this school year, which is to promote the use of technology, eBooks and database. Whenever I have questions about things I am not aware anymore, she helps me solve them by answering all my questions. I could ask her questions about my collections, seminars, book orders or using Teachscape. I think having a mentor is really helpful especially for first time librarians. There were a lot of changes since I stopped working in 2011, and my work is easier because I know I can ask someone whenever I need some clarifications or guidance.
