Candidates model a strong commitment to the profession by participating in professional growth and leadership opportunities through membership in library associations, attendance at professional conferences, reading professional publications, and exploring Internet resources. Candidates plan for ongoing professional growth.
The library media specialist should open the door to professional growth in the building. She or he should share her expertise in using research database with the staff and allow them to use these in their instruction. There is a rewarding feeling when I see the teachers using the database or technology that I taught them, the same feeling when I teach the students. American Association of School Librarians set the learning standards to guide library media specialists in educating students and teachers. There are AASL Learning Standards that correlates with the Common Core Standards Crosswalk. All library media specialist must use and follow the standards because it serves as a tool to shape the students learning.
During my ISTC 789, Practicum, I was fortunate to attend the 2nd Annual Teaching and Learning Conference. This event was held at Laurel High School last October 2, 2015. I was able to join other library media specialists of Prince George’s County Public School. The conference had five sessions, which started from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The first session was about “eContent: Virtual and Digital Literacy Across Content Areas”. This workshop’s goal was to support the systemic definition of literacy and the Rigorous Literacy Plan using digital resources. We looked at our Destiny catalog and they introduced the eBooks, TrueFlix and Rosen Interactive eBooks. The second session was about “Self-Discovery through a Digital Lens: ProQuest’s SIRS Discoverer and SKS SIRS”. This session allowed us to collaborate and network through literacy focus. We were given time to complete an online survey and real-life scenario exercise that guided us through resources to supplement targets in the systemic literacy plan. The third session was about “Infuse Digital & Visual Literacy into the PGCPS Write-A-Book Literary Program”. They showed us samples like the pop-up books and also a webpage where there were different samples of books that we can show to students to promote the Write-A-Book Literary Program. Ms. Brown also showed us MakerSpace and how it can be used in Write-A-Book. The fourth session was about “Literacy and FfT Evaluation Responses”. In this session we reviewed available literacy tools to support the content curriculum. Ms. Shari also showed us the targeted next steps for FfT evaluation taskforce process. At present, we are being evaluated using SFT evaluation and I personally like it better than Fft. The last session we had was about “Unpack and Plan a Research Project: Research to Build & Present Knowledge”. We were asked to read "The Moon Challenge", a journal article about creating research projects that integrate all the required standards. The goal was to develop an understanding of how to integrate RELA MD Career and College Readiness Standards for writing, speaking and listening with Social Studies Standards K-12 in order to create a short, focused research project using a new template. The teaching and learning conference was very informative and inspiring. I had the opportunity to share these to my students and taught them TrueFlix, Rosen Interactive eBooks and MakerSpace. The teachers and students love it and I am looking forward to attend the third teaching and learning conference next year.
During my ISTC 789 Practicum, I was able to give a professional development to all the staff in the building. My agenda was to promote digital literacy using virtual library resources. I introduced the eBooks Abdo Digital, MckinVia, Rosen Interactive eBooks and TrueFlix. I also taught them how to find books from Destiny and use Safari Montage to watch videos. The professional development started at 2:30 PM in the computer lab. I had two groups; the first was the intermediate group (3rd to 6th grade), and second was the primary group (head start to 2nd grade). I showed them how to use the Destiny website first and how they can find books from our library collection. Then I showed them the eBooks. I only had to show them the basic for using Safari Montage because we were only given 40 minutes for each session. I appreciate that the teachers liked everything that I showed them. They also found the books that they wanted to show their students in class and they realized they do not have to borrow a DVD from the library because most of the DVDs we have are also in Safari Montage. I received many positive feedbacks from both groups and I am looking forward to see them use these databases in their classrooms. The teachers were asking for more training and I told them that I would give them another training about using the other research database. They were all excited to learn the other database I had in the trifold flyer I gave them in the beginning of the PD. I will definitely give them a part two once the principal gives me a chance to give another professional development day.
