A library media specialist plays an important role in school because he or she promotes strategic initiatives and digital transformation in the classroom. Good bye to the old type of librarian who just checks out books, and hello to the teacher librarian who has an expanded role of spending more time in the classroom, collaborating with teachers, introducing digital citizenship to students, and becoming technology experts in the building.
During my ISTC 601, Library Media Administration, I learned how to make a mission and vision statement for the school that I chose, the Ardmore Elementary School. My vision states that, Ardmore Elementary School Library Media envisions being the center of dynamic learning environment. I was able to write seven missions to meet this vision. It was a little difficult to write a mission vision because when I was not in a teaching environment that time. But now that I am a school librarian, I feel that it is easier to plan for my school and write a vision-mission statement because I am already here and I know what my school needs. Although I have not started making a vision-mission for Rosa L. Parks Elementary, I would probably base it to the vision-mission assignment that I made because it was something similar to what I want for my school.
In my ISTC 651, Information Literacy and Access class, I created a reference interview assignment. I wrote a seven-page document summarizing what I have observed from visiting a public library. The library I picked was Aspen Hill Public Library in Montgomery County. I observed the ambiance, librarians, patrons and organization of this library. I also got a chance to interview the librarian. Her name is Ms. Patricia. I picked her because she was very helpful and always on the go. She was very patient to all the patrons and when I spoke with her, she was very professional and informative. She has been working for 12 years now and her expertise in the library really impressed me. I was amazed at how she helps the patrons in finding what they want and making reference interviews. I admire her job because she is not just a librarian, she also helped in making the website of the Montgomery County Public Library System. She mentioned the different services they give to patrons, and I felt so lucky that I have known her even for a short period of time. Talking to veteran librarians really inspires me. It is also amazing that after 12 years, she is still energetic and knows a lot of database to share to patrons. Similar to talking to a mentor, when I spoke with her, I felt like I learned more and wanted to share it to my students. My initiative to educate my students to use the public library strengthens and I was inspired to motivate them more to visit a public library other than our school library.
