The library collection supports students’ learning. The materials a school librarian acquires for his or her school must support the curriculum and constantly change. Yearly, a librarian weeds her or his library collection and collaborates with teachers to determine which non-print or print materials will best impact student achievement.
During my EDUC 717, Children’s Literature and Materials for Reading, I learned how to review and evaluate books. I reviewed 29 books from my library collection at William Paca Elementary School. I had to write the description, genre, themes, characters, literary qualities, age and grade level, personal response and instructional uses of these books. I learned that a librarian, I should know my collections very well and review the books so I know which are best to recommend to the students and teachers. I am glad because I learned how to do review books and I am doing it now in my practicum. I think finding out that age and grade level of a book is very important because it is difficult to read if the child has picked a book that is not appropriate for him or her. In my practicum, everytime a teacher or student asks me to recommend a book, I always look at the age and grade level from the catalog. I do not want to make a mistake, so I always double check and read some pages of the book to find out if it is really appropriate for them.
During my Practicum, ISTC 789, I was able to review two books for our review and evaluation in Bonnie Johns. It was easy for me because I am working in an elementary school and most of the books I picked to review were picture books. I had to look at the text size if it was appropriate for K-2 or 3-6. I also had to read and look for words if they were appropriate for my students. Pictures are also important because some picture books have more words than pictures or vice versa. When I reviewed these books, I had to determine if the amount of text and graphics were appropriate for certain age or grade levels. I would like to review non-fiction books next quarter. Since I started knowing more my collections, I discovered which book themes I should add next year. The review and evaluation gives us books to evaluate and after we evaluate them, the book is ours to keep in our library. I have to be very choosy when I pick the books to review because these are the books that I want for my students and teachers to read, and they are free books.
In my ISTC 789, Practicum, I was able to write three monthly reports from September to November. It is important to always submit a monthly report to Ms. Shari Blohm and my principal. In these monthly reports, I had to write the summary of my circulation for each month. I also had to write how I used the library, how many students used the library, if I used technology and database, and shared some of my concerns. I was happy to see that my circulation of books never decreased, but increased the number every month. I also shared there that I needed new bookshelves for my library so I can add more professional books. My principal was very supportive and she already told her secretary to look for new bookshelves in the catalog.
