A library media specialist must provide all patrons with a welcoming, comfortable, and safe environment. Everything in the library should be organized, well planned, books were picked according to the school’s need, and the budget was used appropriately.
During my ISTC 789, Practicum, I ordered 96 books from Follett and my budget was $1,167.45. The books I picked were based on the school’s current collection. I ordered Black-Eyed Susan books because I do not have much of them in my collection. I also ordered books according to what the teachers’ recommended in August. I also ordered one or two copies more of the most borrowed fiction books from my library. I have 916 students and having that big population, it is important that I keep duplicate copies of books. This school year, I have a list of books that I want to purchase if I get a budget again next school year. It was nice that I always picked the books for the students to checkout, because I became more aware of my collections.
In ISTC 601, Library Media Administration, my key assignment was about the facilities design plan. I really like this assignment because I designed my own library and picked the programs that I liked. With the help of my engineer husband, we designed the floor plan and gave it to our architect friend for the final floor plan created in Auto CAD. There was a computer area, storytelling area, presentation and lecture area, circulation area, librarian’s office and work area, studio room, storage and communication room, and a small bathroom. I was surprised when I started working at Rosa L. Parks Elementary, because most of my designs were similar to this library. The only thing missing was the small bathroom. I have been doing the programs that I wrote in my facilities design assignment. I think I have done almost 90% of it in my library.
During my ISTC 601, Library Media Administration, I made a PowerPoint presentation of my budget proposal. What I needed in my proposal was to increase student use of the Media Center for pleasure reading by creating a comfortable and attractive reading area with high interest reading material. I proposed to buy students’ comfortable moon seats, interplay tablet chairs and an end table. My total budget was $1,703.09. I picked these chairs because I wanted my library to be inviting to students and teachers. The moon seats were movable and they can organize them around the room. The tablet chairs can hold a laptop or any reading material while seating. The end table will be placed at the end of the tablet chairs for any purposes. My classmates and teachers approved my proposal, but the best thing about this assignment was I learned how to budget and make a presentation for future budget plans. I learned that I have to look for a research that will support my budget proposal. I also learned that if I have something to propose to my principal, I could make a presentation and send it to her so she would have a better idea of what I want for my library. This January, I am planning to make a proposal for my bookshelves. I will use what I learned from this activity and will make a short PowerPoint presentation for her to view and approve.
