Candidates communicate and collaborate with students, teachers, administrators, and community members to develop a library program that aligns resources, services, and standards with the school's mission. Candidates make effective use of data and information to assess how the library program addresses the needs of their diverse communities.
It is a challenge to collaborate with teachers, students and administrators to promote a learning community that encourages learners to be independent, lifelong learners and producers of ideas and information. It is truly a big effort to make collaborative projects and ideas that support the curriculum, but are rewarding as well. A library media specialist must be open for collaboration and promotes this in the building all throughout the school year.
During my ISTC 789, Practicum, I made an action plan for Rosa L. Parks Elementary for school year 2015-2016. My school improvement plan goal is that seventy percent (70%) of students will demonstrate proficiency in using the OPAC, database and EBooks that will support their information literacy, reading and writing skills. This year, we focus on building a culture of literacy by emphasizing rigorous literacy instruction in all subject areas. The school’s five-year plan goals are reading, writing and reasoning in all content areas. My action plan was aligned to the school’s five-year plan because it focused on these three skills. I aimed to promote digital literacy by using virtual resources, and also using the three skills to see the development and success of my action plan. I only wrote 70% of my students to be proficient because I only teach digital literacy to kindergarten to 6th grades. It is more difficult to teach technology to the younger kids because they need more guidance and examples. Collaboration has never been a problem in my Media program because all our teachers always answer to my needs. They are very cooperative and I also try to respect their schedules and limitations.
In my ISTC 789, Practicum, I was able to create collaborative lessons with grades first to sixth for CultureGrams and Makerspace. I also collaborated with the kindergarten teachers to teach the students about shapes. It feels good knowing that what I am reading, teaching, and the activities we do in class are in-line with the curriculum. The teachers were always appreciative of what I am doing in Media and they always see my curriculum effective because it supports their lessons.
During my ISTC 651, Information Literacy and Access, I made a collaborative lesson plan using the Big Six research format. The topic I chose was about the planets of the solar system. I used the same format I did in my classes. I wrote the common core standards and AASL standards. I used different resources like books and database. I also asked the students to answer a three-point rubric for self and group evaluation. The students will also use their writing, listening and speaking skills in this lesson. This lesson is something that I would really like to use with my students because it is a collaborative activity with the 5th grade Science teacher. Since my students were already finished with the lesson about planets, I will keep this lesson plan for next year to use in the first quarter. I will also talk with the Science teacher if he would like to help me grade the students during their presentation by using a rubric that I will prepare. I like collaborating with subject teachers because we come up with wonderful ideas and work together as a team.
